AOA - AACOM Collaboration
on the Future of Osteopathic Medical Education

OME Summit II

MEDICAL EDUCATION SUMMIT II (MES II)

The second medical education summit, MES II, was held in November 2007 under the leadership of Summit Chair Karen J. Nichols, DO.  The summit focused on the future of osteopathic graduate medical education and covered a range of topics including global issues, resources, structural issues, and issues related to specialty mix.  Fifteen concepts were generated by MES II and prioritized as follows:

  1. Enhance the collaboration between UME and GME:
  2. Expand OGME training positions for DOs
  3. Appoint Task Force to study the impact of admitting MDs into OGME training.
  4. Support and enhance OGME
  5. Study OPTI (360 degree)
  6. Study OGME (current status, going forward, compare AOA in contrast to ACGME)
  7. Enhance OGME educational program
  8. Advance research
  9. Preserve, protect and expand GME funding
  10. Advocate for financial incentives for primary care
  11. Advocate for new practice models in primary care
  12. Improve the perception of primary care during undergraduate medical education
  13. Support initiatives that enhance the quality of primary care training programs
  14. Develop a policy for interaction with Non-physician clinicians (PA, NP, etc)
  15. Educate society (patients, payers, etc.) on the capabilities of primary care physicians

From these concepts, the Medical Education Summit Progress Task Force (MES PTF) was formed to provide a structure to ensure that all recommendations were acted on by the AOA Board of Trustees and the AACOM Board of Deans.  The MES PTF addressed the concepts by dividing them under the guidance of three working groups focused on postdoctoral, predoctoral, and specialty mix issues.
