MEDICAL EDUCATION SUMMIT I (MES I)
The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and the American Osteopathic Association collaborated to hold the first Medical Education Summit (MES I) January 26-29, 2006, in Chicago, IL. It was a historic event that brought together approximately 70 key leaders in the osteopathic profession to discuss important education issues on Growth, Recruitment, Funding and Quality. Under the leadership of Summit Chair D. Keith Watson, DO, MES I created an opportunity for stakeholders to develop full, robust strategies, analyze the impact of external and internal forces on osteopathic medical education and implement necessary changes to ensure that high-quality, competitive osteopathic undergraduate and graduate medical education programs would be valued by practicing osteopathic physicians, students and trainees; and ultimately meet the needs of our patient population and communities in terms of improving patient care.
Sixty-one consensus statements were developed and approved during the MES I process. AOA and AACOM leadership reviewed the consensus statements, prioritized them and moved recommendations that needed further development into review at Medical Education Summit II.
